What Is AVIF Format?

AVIF (AV1 Image File Format) is a next-generation image format developed by the Alliance for Open Media. Based on the AV1 video codec, AVIF offers significantly better compression than JPEG and even WebP — often achieving 50% smaller file sizes at similar visual quality.

Major tech companies including Google, Apple, Netflix, and Meta support AVIF. However, despite its advantages, AVIF is not yet universally supported across all applications, devices, and platforms — which is why you might need to convert AVIF images to the widely compatible JPG format.

Why Convert AVIF to JPG?

  • Universal Compatibility: JPG/JPEG is supported by every browser, device, operating system, and image editor. AVIF is not — older browsers like Internet Explorer and some Android apps cannot open AVIF files.
  • Email & Messaging: Most email clients and messaging apps (WhatsApp, Telegram) handle JPG natively but may not display AVIF images correctly.
  • Print Services: Photo printing services, design tools (older Photoshop versions, Canva), and document processors typically require JPG or PNG.
  • Social Media: While platforms like Instagram and Facebook accept various formats, JPG ensures your images display correctly everywhere without any conversion issues.
  • Website Fallback: Web developers often need JPG versions of AVIF images as fallbacks for browsers that don't support AVIF.
  • Government & Official Forms: Online portals for IDs, applications, and exams almost always require JPG/JPEG format.

How to Convert AVIF to JPG

  1. Upload: Click "Select AVIF Images" or drag and drop your .avif files. You can select up to 50 files at once.
  2. Adjust Quality: Use the quality slider to balance between file size and image quality. 92% (default) gives excellent results. Lower quality = smaller file size.
  3. Convert: Click "Convert to JPG". Each image is processed instantly in your browser — nothing is uploaded to any server.
  4. Download: Single files download automatically. For multiple files, use the "Download All as ZIP" button.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the conversion completely free?

Yes, 100% free with no limits. No registration, no watermarks, no daily caps. Convert as many AVIF images as you need.

Do you store my images?

No. All processing happens directly in your browser using HTML5 Canvas. Your AVIF files are never sent to any server. We literally cannot see your images.

Why can't I open AVIF files on my computer?

AVIF is a relatively new format. Windows 10 (older versions), macOS before Ventura, and many image editors don't support it natively. Converting to JPG gives you a universally compatible file.

Will I lose quality when converting AVIF to JPG?

There is minimal quality loss since JPG uses lossy compression. However, at 92% quality (our default), the difference is virtually imperceptible. Note that any transparency in the AVIF image will be replaced with a white background in JPG.

Can I convert AVIF to PNG instead of JPG?

We're working on more conversion tools. For now, this tool outputs JPG which is the most commonly needed format. JPG is better for photographs, while PNG preserves transparency.

What browsers support AVIF?

Chrome 85+, Firefox 93+, Safari 16+, and Edge 121+ support AVIF. Older browsers and many mobile apps do not, which is why JPG conversion is often necessary.
